Purpose: Students will begin to identify existing work and materials that can speak to their research.
Class Discussion: In this phase of the design process, it is helpful to look for existing technologies and experiences that can inspire your design. These are called precedents, and can come in three main types :
LOOKS LIKE - visual or material inspiration
WORKS LIKE - mechanical, experiential, or functional inspiration
CONCEPTUAL - an inspiring idea or story (we'll get back to this later)
The best precedents at this stage are those that spark curiosity or inspiration that can launch you into making your next prototype.
Instructions:
You are going to find precedents that connect to each of your Supercreature trading cards. For each card, try to find a precedent that looks like or works like your animal feature. This precedent could be in any field of design: prosthetics, robotics, fashion, architecture.
If you have some extra time, find more precedents!
Blog Post:
For each precedent, make a blog post with:
- An image or GIF
- A two-sentence description of what the precedent is/how it works
- A link to the source (where you found this information)
